Hey, it’s Jeffrey Kirk here.
Let me ask you something. Have you ever run an ad and felt like it completely missed the mark? Like it reached… the wrong people? You spend money. The ad goes live. And then… crickets. No clicks. No calls. And no conversions. That’s not just frustrating, it’s a waste of your budget and your time.
But here’s the good news: when you understand how to target your ads the right way, everything changes. You’ll stop guessing and start connecting with the exact people who actually want what you offer. So in this video, I’m going to show you how to reach the right audience with your ads — even if you’re brand new to this. Let’s break it down together.
Know Who You’re Talking To
Now first, let’s talk about who you’re talking to. Running effective ads starts long before you hit the launch button. You need to get crystal clear on your ideal customer. What do they care about? And what problems are they trying to solve? What frustrates them, and what would make them click?
Imagine you’re selling eco-friendly water bottles. Your best customers might be commuters, fitness enthusiasts, or people who care about sustainability. But here’s the trick: don’t stop at general traits. Create a vivid mental picture.
I like to give them names like “Eco-conscious Emma” or “Busy Dad Dan.” It sounds silly, but trust me, it helps you write ads that feel personal. Okay, so once you know who they are… where are they hanging out?
Choose the Right Platform
Different platforms attract different people. If your audience is on LinkedIn and you’re advertising on TikTok… that’s going to be a problem. Keep in mind, you don’t need to be everywhere, just where your audience is.
So let’s run through this quickly. Facebook and Instagram? Great for adults, parents, and local buyers. TikTok? That’s your younger, trend-hungry crowd. LinkedIn? Perfect for professionals and B2B. YouTube? Works for just about everyone — but especially if you want to explain, demo, or tell a story.
And Google Ads? That’s where you meet people who are actively searching for something specific, like “best home cleaning service near me.”
Picking the right platform makes your budget go further. Because now, you’re showing up in the places where your customers already spend their time. Now, this is where it gets powerful: targeting.
Use the Power of Targeting
Most platforms let you choose who sees your ads based on age, interests, location, job titles — you name it. You can even target people who recently visited specific websites or watched certain videos.
Say you sell skincare products. You can run ads just for women aged 20 to 35 who follow beauty influencers and have recently visited makeup sites. That’s not a shot in the dark. That’s laser-focused marketing. And if you want to get really smart with it — use retargeting.
Ads Retargeting
Ever visit a website and then start seeing ads for that product everywhere you go?
That’s retargeting. And it works, because you’re reconnecting with people who’ve already shown interest. They visited your site. Watched your video. Maybe even added something to their cart. These people are warmer leads. Don’t let them disappear. Bring them back with retargeted ads!
Now, even with great targeting, you’re not going to get everything right the first time. And that’s okay. This is where testing comes in. You don’t have to guess, you just try different versions and see what works. Maybe it’s a new headline. A different image. A call to action that’s a little stronger.
Test, Learn, and Tweak
You learn by running small tests, watching the results, and then improving over time. We call it A/B testing, and it’s like tuning up a machine. You make one change, measure the impact, and then fine-tune until it performs. But there’s one more thing that’s often overlooked. And it’s a big one…
Make sure your messages match. Your ad better match the offer. What someone sees in your ad should feel exactly like what they see when they click. If your ad promises “Free Shipping Today Only,” then your site better show that offer front and center.
If there’s a disconnect, people bounce. Consistency builds trust. And trust? That’s what turns clicks into customers.
So let’s wrap this up with a quick summary. If you want your ads to reach the right people, here’s what you need to remember:
Start by really understanding your audience. Then pick the platform where your audience is the most active. Use targeting to zero in on the right group.
Add retargeting to bring people back. And keep testing and improving. And then make sure your ad and your website match in message and in tone.
Do these six things, and you won’t just be advertising — you’ll be connecting. If you found this video helpful, please give it a thumbs up, and subscribe, and let me know in the comments what topics you might want me to cover next.
