Hello, my name is Jeffrey Kirk.

Are you using a Google Business Profile for your business? Frankly, if you want to establish a presence in local search results, you must have a Google Business Profile, and you have to set it up right!

The good news is a Google Business Profile is free, easy to set up, and has the potential to drive significant traffic to your website or physical location from Google Search and Google Maps. However, simply having a business profile is not enough. It must be completely filled out, optimized, and regularly updated for your business to get the results you probably want.

If you don’t do these things, you may experience significant revenue loss! Of course, you’ll never know how much you’re losing because people aren’t going to tell you that they can’t find you or that they didn’t even consider your business. They simply never show up.

So, are you ready to make your Google Business Profile stand out? Great, let’s get started!

So what exactly is a Google Business Profile?

Basically, it’s a free marketing tool offered by Google which allows business owners to manage their online presence on platforms including Google Search and Google Maps.

By creating a Google Business Profile, your business details, including photos, location, services, and products, become accessible across Google platforms. This enhances your visibility so potential clients can find you with online searches.

Most businesses qualify for a Google Business Profile, regardless of whether they have a physical address or solely operate online. In fact, you don’t even need a website to have a Google Business Profile. The profile can drive people to your phone number instead of a website.

Here are the primary advantages of having a Google Business Profile

Before getting into the setup process, I want you to understand why having a Google Business Profile is essential for your business:

1. Your Profile Enhances Visibility on Google Search and Google Maps

Google uses information from Google Business Profiles (such as location, contact details, and descriptions) to determine the most relevant businesses to display for location-based searches.

This ensures that businesses matching the searcher’s intent will appear in the top search results.

2. Your Profile Maintains Your Online Business Information

You have the flexibility to update your Google Business Profile whenever necessary.

This allows you to maintain control over how your business hours, contact numbers, and other details are presented online, providing easier communication with potential clients so they can reach you using the methods and times that work best.

Additionally, your Google Business Profile serves as a central hub of information. It also functions as a platform for sharing essential business updates, such as unexpected closures or temporary hour changes. Updates can be visible to anyone searching for your business on Google Search or Google Maps.

3. Your Profile Creates Trust through Google Reviews

Google Reviews play an important role in establishing social proof and credibility online. The star rating displayed next to each business influences searchers’ decisions to engage with that business.

And your ratings don’t all have to be 5 stars. Having a mix of positive and negative reviews is viewed favorably by Google, because it indicates authenticity and enhances trustworthiness. A good mix of reviews contributes to better rankings and appeals to potential new clients.

How to Set Up Your Google Business Profile

Okay, now that you understand the importance of a Google Business Profile, let’s get started with the setup process:

Step 1: Sign In At Google.com/business

You do need a Google account for this, so if you don’t have one, create one. It’s best if you have a dedicated business account so you don’t get business and personal notifications mixed up.

Step 2: Add Your Business Details

After signing in, provide your business name when prompted.

Step 3: Specify Your Business Category

You can register a Google Business Profile if you sell products online, have a physical store, or offer in-person services. Select all the options that are relevant for your business.

Step 4: Provide Your Location Information

If your business has a physical location, be sure to enter the address accurately.

You may also be asked to mark your business location on a map. This is important if people come to your location. If your business is only online, then specify the region where your business is based.

Step 5: Add Contact Information

Include relevant contact details such as your website URL and phone number. Both will be publicly visible on your profile.

Step 6: Verify Your Business

Even for online-only businesses, you need to provide a mailing address for verification purposes.

If you get the option, telephone verification is the fastest. But otherwise choose to receive a verification code via email or else you’ll have to record and submit a short video showing some business details.

Step 7: Enhance Your Profile

Once your business is verified, it’s time to optimize your profile by adding additional details like business hours, chat options, a business description, and high-quality photos.

Write a compelling business description and include relevant keywords to improve your visibility in the search results. By completing each area of your profile, you improve visibility and increase engagement with potential new clients.

And that’s it! Congratulations! Your Google Business Profile is officially live! But wait, there’s more!

Now that your profile is set up, it’s important to keep it updated. The more active you are, the better your profile will perform when someone is searching.

Here are more bonus optimization tips:

  1. Utilize special attributes specific to your business type, such as menu uploads for restaurants or appointment booking for service providers.
  2. Incorporate descriptive labels to communicate essential information, like accessibility features or inclusivity initiatives.
  3. Enhance your profile with authentic images showcasing your business operations and offerings.
  4. Craft a custom description highlighting unique aspects of your business and incorporating relevant keywords for improved search visibility.
  5. Regularly update your profile with current information to maintain accuracy and reliability for potential new clients.
  6. Engage with customers by posting updates, promotions, and events to keep them informed and interested in your business.
  7. And finally, remember to regularly monitor and respond to client reviews to show that you value their feedback and are committed to providing excellent service.

In 2024, setting up a Google Business Profile is more important than ever if you want to succeed online. By following these steps and continuously optimizing your Google Business Profile, you can enhance your online presence, attract more customers, and drive business growth.
